Who are we?

We are a team of researchers led by Asst. Professor Eric Kazyak in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin – Madison working to understand and overcome challenges at the intersection of energy, materials, and sustainability. We are passionate about advancing technology through fundamental understanding and application of scalable, sustainable processing methods. We are striving to build a diverse team that can learn from each other and work together on these pressing issues.

Our approach seeks to consider the wide range of factors that interact with technologies in the real world including social justice, resource extraction, materials science, and infrastructure. We apply this philosophy to a range of systems including batteries, advanced structural materials, additive manufacturing, and catalysis.

Our interdisciplinary work leverages a range of experimental techniques to gain insight into the complex and coupled phenomena that govern performance and behavior of interfaces, with a special focus on in situ and operando characterization. This approach allows us to observe and understand complex dynamic behaviors that often dictate the performance of electrochemical systems.
